Glória elevator derailment. Children of brakeman killed without school scholarship half a year later

The school grant intended for the children of brakeman André Marques, who died in the Glória elevator accident, in Lisbon, half a year ago, has not yet been paid, acknowledged this Wednesday, March 4, the Lisbon City Council, questioned by the PS.

A PS source at the Lisbon City Council (CML) told the Lusa agency that the executive led by Carlos Moedas recognized, at the private council meeting taking place this Wednesday, that, Six months after the accident at the Elevador da Glória, the school grant for the children of brakeman André Marques has not yet been paid, nor have they received the necessary psychological support.

The issue was raised by PS councilor Alexandra Leitão, during the debate on the state of play of support measures for victims and their families. On the occasion, PT councilors presented a vote in honor of the victims of the accident, marking the six months that had passed.

The Glória elevator, much sought after by tourists in the center of Lisbon, derailed on September 3, with one of the two cabins colliding violently against a building, causing 16 deaths and more than 20 injuries, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.

According to the same source, the socialist councilor insisted on the need for concrete responses regarding the monitoring of the victims and their families, as well as compliance with the support announced after the accident.

Alexandra Leitão also questioned the executive about the status of the process, including the payment of compensation, the planned social support and the dissemination of clear information about the conditions under which the reopening of the elevator may occur, arguing that the municipality must guarantee transparency and public clarification.

According to the Socialist Party, faced with news indicating delays in paying compensation to victims of the accident, the chamber referred the matter to the responsible insurance company.
