Three men detained in the UK on suspicion of being Chinese spies

British police revealed this Wednesday, March 4, that they had arrested three men on suspicion of being spies working for China.

The operations, which were supported by the Welsh and Scottish divisions of counter-terrorism police, targeted a 39-year-old man who was arrested in London, while the other two are aged 68 and 43 and were intercepted in the Welsh towns of Powys and Pontyclun respectively.

Helen Flanagan, head of London’s Anti-Terrorism Police, explained that these arrests “are part of a proactive investigation” and, although the case is being handled with great care, there is no indication that there is “any imminent or direct threat” to the population.

British Security Minister Dan Jarvis confirmed the arrests in the House of Commons this Wednesday, adding that they “are related to foreign interference against British democracy.”

“We remain deeply concerned about an increasing pattern of secret activities by agents linked to the Chinese state, aimed at democracy in the United Kingdom”, he stressed, guaranteeing that “this government will not tolerate” a situation of this kind.
