FORT PIERCE.- Ryan Routhaccused of trying to assassinate the now president Donald Trump in 2024, it was sentenced to life imprisonmentin addition to a seven-year consecutive sentence for a charge related to the possession of weapons.
The sentence, by the federal district judge Aileen Cannonwas spoken in the same Fort Pierce courtroom where Routh attempted to stab himself after being found guilty on all charges.
The charges against him were attempted murder of a presidential candidate, using a firearm in furtherance of a crime, assaulting a federal agent, possessing a firearm while having a criminal record, and using a weapon with an altered serial number.
Ryan Routh sentenced to life in prison for attack against Trump
Prosecutors in the case sought life in prison without parole, arguing that Routh does not regret his actions and has never apologized for them.
“Routh remains unrepentant for his crimes, never apologized for the lives he put at risk, and his life demonstrates a near-total disregard for the law.“says the memo.
For his part, his defense lawyer Martin L. Roth He asked for a sentence of 27 years, pointing out that in two weeks he will turn 60 years old.
His request called for 20 years in prison in addition to a mandatory sentence of seven years behind bars for one of the weapons convictions.
“The defendant is two weeks away from turning 60 […] a just punishment will provide a sentence long enough to impose sufficient but not excessive punishment, and will allow the defendant to experience freedom again instead of dying in prison“.

Additionally, he offered to exchange his life in a prisoner swap and claimed that Trump could “take out his frustrations on my face.”
