Ryan Routh gets life in prison for attempted assassination of Donald Trump in 2024

A judge sentenced this Wednesday to life imprisonment Ryan Routhaccused of attempting to murder Donald Trump on his golf course in Florida in 2024. This two months before the presidential elections in the United States.

Ryan Routh, 59appeared in federal court in Fort Pierce, southeast Florida, to hear his sentence.

In September 2025, a jury found him guilty of five charges, including attempted murder of a presidential candidate. Upon hearing the verdict, the accused tried to stab himself with a penbut some guards prevented him from doing so.

Judge Aileen Cannon followed the prosecution’s request on Wednesday and gave Routh the greatest possible punishment. “to protect people from future crimes committed by him.”

Ryan Routh was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a weapon due to his criminal record, possession of a weapon with an obliterated serial numberpossession of a firearm for the purpose of committing a violent crime and assault on a federal officer.

Moment of the assassination attempt

On September 15, 2024, a US Secret Service agent saw the barrel of a rifle poking out of bushes at the West Palm Beach golf course, where Trump was playing a game.

The officer opened fire and Routh, who fled in a vehicle and was arrested shortly after by police.

Police found a loaded semi-automatic rifle, equipped with a telescopic sight and a magazine with ammunition additional at the scene.

During the trial, a witness testified that Routh had left a box at his residence that included a handwritten letter that read: “Dear world. This was an assassination attempt against Donald Trumpbut I am very sorry for having failed you.”

Trump was hit in the ear. His images with blood on his face and his fist raised went around the world and what happened was considered a key moment in the campaign that brought him back to the White House.
