Miguel Díaz-Canel thanks Andrés Manuel López Obrador for his support of Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba.- This Sunday, the president of cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canelthanked the “generous solidarity and support” of Mexicoin response to a message from the former president of that nation, Andrés Manuel López Obradorin which he expressed his support for the people of the island.

“Thank you, dear brother. On behalf of Cuba, I will not tire of thanking Mexico for its generous solidarity and accompaniment to the heroic resistance of the Cuban people,” Díaz-Canel expressed on social networks.

He also noted: “We will never forget your permanent and decisive support in strengthening that endearing friendship.”

AMLO asks for economic help for Cuba

Yesterday Saturday, the former Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obradorreleased a message on social networks in support of Cuba in which he called to help the people of the island by making a deposit into a bank account of a civil association.

“I am in retirement, but it hurts me that they seek to exterminate, for their ideals of freedom and defense of sovereignty, the brother people of Cuba,” López Obrador, who held the presidency of Mexico between 2018 and 2024, stated in his message.

He stressed that “to those who think that this is someone else’s lawsuit, I remind them of what General (Lázaro) Cárdenas said when the invasion of Playa Girón occurred: ‘It is not legal to advocate our indifference to their heroic struggle, because their fate is ours.'”

López Obrador closed his message with a call to “help the Cuban people. Let everyone contribute what they can!”

Cuban doctors for Mexico and oil for Cuba

During his government, López Obrador signed an agreement with Cuba to hire doctors from the island and bring them to the country and, in turn, he fulfilled oil shipments, both for contract and for humanitarian reasons.

Mexico’s support for the Cuban people

Last Friday, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardoalso reiterated the Mexico’s support for the Cuban peopleboth for humanitarian reasons and for the country’s foreign policy principles.

He also reiterated Mexico’s willingness to contribute to bring closer positions between Washington and Havana in the midst of the escalation of tensions that have taken place in recent months.

His statement coincided with the recognition of the Cuban Government that representatives of that Executive have maintained contacts with US authorities with the aim of identifying problems in the bilateral relationship and evaluating possible avenues for cooperation.

Humanitarian aid from Mexico to Cuba

That day two Mexican ships also arrived at the port of Havana with a third humanitarian aid shipment for the Caribbean country.

Mexico is the country that has sent the most aid to Cuba in recent months with a total of about 2,000 tons, mostly basic foods and hygiene products.
