The “Black Strat” was used by David Gilmour on all of the legendary British progressive rock band’s albums between 1970 and 1983, including the iconic Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals e The Wall.
Thursday night’s auction featured a collection of rock instruments belonging to businessman Jim Irsay, former owner of the Indianapolis Colts football team, who passed away in 2025.
Other guitars fetched record prices, like the one custom-made for Jerry Garcia, co-founder of another pillar of the psychedelic movement, the Grateful Dead, which sold for $11.56 million.
A blue Fender Mustang used by Kurt Cobain in the music video for the worldwide hit Smells Like Teen Spirit it was sold for 6.9 million dollars.
