The last direct elections for the PSD leadership were held in September two years ago, but four years ago they were held on May 28th.
On the occasion, Montenegro recalled that he was elected president of the PSD for the first time on May 28, 2022 and expressed the desire that direct elections could not return to this calendar, after having slipped to after the summer in 2024 due to the European elections.
“We will therefore have the opportunity to hold direct elections, our Congress and not disturb the progress of our political and governmental strategy with doubts that the Portuguese may not understand”he stated.
The social democratic leader challenged anyone who has a “different and alternative path” to come forward, in what was interpreted as a response to former Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, who has criticized the Government.
