The section connecting to the Sesimbra harbor on Estrada Nacional (EN) 378, damaged due to bad weather, was closed this Wednesday, March 4, following a precautionary measure filed by private individuals with interests in the surrounding area.
In a joint statement, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) and Sesimbra City Council say that the last inspection, on Tuesday, 3rd, confirmed the existence of technical conditions for the section to operate, but a precautionary measure forced it to be closed.
They further explain that, following some signs of instability observed on an embankment on the EN 378, IP carried out, over the last few weeks, technical assessments on site and, with the interventions carried out and the restrictions imposed, the route was operating in safe conditions.
This situation occurred after a period of closure of the road, which reopened to traffic on February 20a decision taken “based on exclusively technical criteria, and in conjunction with Civil Protection and the Sesimbra City Council”, says the note.
They also reiterate that the most recent technical verification, carried out on Tuesday, “reaffirmed the compliance of existing conditions with road traffic”.
IP and the Municipal Council of Sesimbra, district of Setúbal, reaffirm that all decisions adopted “are based exclusively on technical criteria and public interest” and say that they will continue to make every effort to reestablish circulation on this section, which they consider structuring the municipality.
The cutting of the connection section to the Sesimbra harbor prevents the unloading of fish and the supply of fuel, with a direct impact on the economic activity of the port area.
This situation with EN 378 is related to the bad weather that affected mainland Portugal about a month ago.
