The PSD voted in favor of a PS motion, unanimously approved at the meeting this Tuesday, February 24, of the Barreiro City Council, which repudiates the closure of the obstetrics emergency at Barreiro Hospitalconfirmed hours earlier by the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins.
The decision of the Government of Luís Montenegro, which was justified by the minister because the urgent need for obstetrics “is not able to remain open”, due to a lack of doctors, was contested by the social-democratic municipal deputy Luís Tavares Bravo. “In a district where the population has grown the most, it is not enough to have a maternity service. We also need to have emergencies”, he said, referring to the fact that Hospital do Barreiro serves other municipalities in the district of Setúbal.
In exchange for approval, the social democratic bench managed to get the PS motion to include a point demanding, in addition to maintaining the obstetrics emergency, the reopening of the cardiology service at Hospital do Barreiro. This was closed, without warning, before the 2024 legislative elections, by António Costa’s Executive.
Speaking to DN, the municipal deputy, who previously led the social-democratic council in Barreiro, acknowledged that Ana Paula Martins “took the National Health Service to pieces” and that the responsibilities of socialist governance, the party that re-elected Frederico Rosa as president of the Chamber, cannot be forgotten, which does not prevent him from completely disagreeing with the decision to close the Obstetrics emergency department at Hospital do Barreiro.
“I always demand more from ministers from my party than from those from the PS”, said Tavares Bravo, in a speech at the Barreiro Municipal Assemblyhighlighting “some positive signs” from Ana Paula Martins at the Ministry of Health, such as “there are more Barreirenses with a family doctor”.
