Marcelo trusts in voter participation in municipalities with postponed elections

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, considered this Saturday (14) that voters in the municipalities where the presidential elections were postponed will heed the call and vote in the elections taking place on Sunday in these municipalities.

“I came [votar] for sure and there is one thing that the Portuguese showed, which is, the greater the challenge, the more there they are at the voting table”said the head of state, during a visit to Alcácer do Sal, whose waterfront was flooded due to floods on the River Sado.

The presidential elections will be held on Sunday in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal, after the chamber decides to postpone the vote, scheduled for the 8th, as the necessary security conditions for the election are not met.

In addition to Alcácer do Sal, the municipalities of Arruda dos Vinhos, in the Lisbon district, Golegã, in Santarém, will also have presidential elections this Sunday.

In statements to journalists, the head of state said that the Portuguese vote, whatever the vote, because they understand that “it is fundamental” to their lives: “If I’m not the one going to vote, then who will?”, he alluded.

Asked by journalists whether there would be little motivation among voters to vote, given that there is already an elected president, Marcelo replied that he considers the opposite.

António José Seguro was elected, on the 8th of this month, President of the Republic with around two thirds of the votes cast, totaling approximately 3.48 million votes, with 20 parishes in eight municipalities still to be determined.

André Ventura obtained more than 1.7 million votes.

The elected President of the Republic reached a percentage close to 67%, while the leader of Chega surpassed 33%.

The inauguration of the new head of state will take place on March 9th.
