It is necessary to move from words to action to change Venezuela

The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, María Corina Machado, asked this Saturday, the 14th, to move from words to action for political changes in Venezuela and defended her decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize medal to the American president.

“Certainly, several countries have been very active in denouncing crimes against humanity and corruption networks operating in Venezuela. Today, we believe that we need much more than that, because we need, as I said, to move from words to action”said Machado during an interview at the Munich Security Conference, held this weekend in the Bavarian capital.

Specifically, Machado defended the “blocking of the flow of money” that the Venezuelan Government uses “for repression, corruption and an increase in criminal activities”.

“We need to block these flows. We need to support objective measures against the groups that currently control repression in Venezuela,” argued. She estimates that 20,000 people were detained for political reasons during the governments of Maduro and Hugo Chávezmore than 11,000 were executed and 2,000 tortured.

The opposition leader defended the need to “isolate” the elites of the Venezuelan Government and also to isolate “the extra-hemispheric penetration in Venezuela, which has also been identified”, she added, referring to Caracas’ collaboration with countries such as Iran and Russia.

Machado highlighted that the current interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, “is an essential part of the cartel.” “She was the architect and oversees the torture system and repressive structure, and is the main link to Russia, Iran, Cuba and others. Everyone knows that,” warned. “We all know that this is not sustainable. We all know that this is a phase in which restoration is underway”, he highlighted.

On this path to political change, “we need to free the Venezuelan Armed Forces from this group, made up of a few thousand individuals.” “Only a few thousand highly armed and trained individuals. We need to neutralize and isolate them,” he said.

“For years we have denounced and demonstrated to the world the extent of the crimes committed in Venezuela”he indicated, contrasting this situation with the “decisive action of the government under the leadership of President Trump”.

Machado emphasized that “the only country that risked the lives of some of its citizens for Venezuela’s freedom was the United States.”

“For this reason, we are very grateful, because what happened on January 3rd definitely opened the way for a transition to democracy”, he noted, referring to the military incursion in which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested.

He was the reason why he gave the Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump. “I believe it is fair and represents the feeling, the deep gratitude of the Venezuelan people, not only for what was done, but for what we believe and trust will happen very soon in Venezuela”he argued.
