Marcelo postpones visit to Madrid in joint decision with King Felipe VI

The President of the Republic postponed his visit to Madrid scheduled for Friday, February 6th, in a joint decision with the King of Spain, Felipe VI, and with the agreement of the Spanish and Portuguese governments, due to Storm Leonardo.

According to a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, “the President of the Republic and the King of Spain held a telephone conversation and decided, with the agreement of the governments of Spain and Portugal, to suspend the visit planned for tomorrow [sexta-feira]due to the effects of storm Leonardo, and look for a new date”.

On Wednesday, a source from the Presidency of the Republic told the Lusa agency that the head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, would decide this Thursday on the possible postponement of his visit to Madrid, “in light of the evolution of the situation in Portugal and after a planned conversation with the King of Spain”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had already shortened his visit to Spain, initially scheduled for between Thursday and Friday, due to the calamity declared after Storm Kristin passed through mainland Portugal, and has been on the ground visiting the most affected places.
