The head of Portuguese diplomacy, Paulo Rangel, told Lusa this Tuesday, February 3, that the Government will not override Civil Protection assessments, calling for respect for “technical judgment” in responding to bad weather, while criticizing “political opportunism”.
The activation of the European Civil Protection Mechanism “depends on technical rules and technical assessment of civil protection”, highlighted this Tuesday the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, speaking to Lusa by telephone at the end of an official visit to Algeria.
“The Government will certainly not override the technical judgment of those who know the matters and are on the ground and carry out constant and systematic assessments”he stressed, while leaving an appeal.
“I would appeal to all political actors, at a time when, unfortunately, we still have challenges that have not even been met from a meteorological point of view, to respect the technical judgments of those who have these responsibilities”commented Rangel, adding: “Otherwise, what we are doing here is political opportunism and I think that is unacceptable at a time like this”.
