The former president Michelle Bachelet officially obtained her registration for Chile as a candidate for the position of General Secretariat of the United Nations (UN). This with the support of Mexico and Brazil, the president announced Gabriel Boric.

Michelle Bachelet, 73 years old and a pediatrician by profession, is the only woman to become president in Chile (2006-2010 and 2014-2018). Subsequently, she served as executive director of UN Women (2010-2013) and then, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (2018-2022).
“The candidacy of President Bachelet, who is already registered with the United Nations, will be presented jointly with the sister countries of Brazil and Mexico“, reported the president in a press conference.
Bachelet is one of the candidates to replace the Portuguese António Guterreswho concludes his second term on December 31, 2026.
“I feel very honored to be a candidate for the General Secretariat not only of Chile, but also from Brazil and Mexico. “I appreciate the support for this candidacy and I assume the tremendous responsibility that it means,” Bachelet said alongside Boric.
In 80 years, no woman has held the highest position in the UN and there is barely one representative from Latin America: the Peruvian diplomat Javier Pérez de Cuéllar between 1982 and 1991.

According to an unregulated practice that is not always followed, the general secretary rotates between regions. This time, it would be Latin America’s turn and There is agreement that it should be a woman.

Also competing for the position are Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan, secretary general of the UN Conference on Trade and Development; Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of the Environment of Mexico; Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, and the Argentine Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
