The nation’s No. 1 seed continues to thrive, going undefeated in Big Ten play over No. 3 Penn State over the weekend. The Spartans defeated the Nittany Lions 5-0 in Game 2 for their fourth win against a top-three team this season.
Goaltender Trey Augustin has been excellent in the series, stopping 59 of 60 shots for his third shutout in seven starts. Charlie Stramel scored 4 points in Game 2 (2G, 2A) and scored the game-winning goal in the first quarter as the Spartans beat PSU.

Penn State falls to 9-3-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in the Big Ten. MSU improves to 7-1-0 and starts 2-0-0 in conference play. Penn State returns home next weekend for another Big Ten matchup against Michigan, while MSU travels to South Bend to take on Notre Dame.

The Nittany Lions pulled their goaltender for an extra skater after Penn State’s game was stopped by a penalty.

We’ve reached a boiling point at Munn Ice Arena. PSU’s Jerod Crespo and MSU’s Ryker Lee were ejected after the whistle. As Penn State tries to mount a comeback against the No. 1 Spartans, it’s a lucky turn for the Nittany Lions, but they come out with a power play.

It was a quick 10 minutes into the third quarter, with the Spartans holding a three-goal lead late in Michigan State’s favor. Penn State had some chances and had nine shots on Augustine, but time was running out for the Nittany Lions to mount a comeback.

It all happened this afternoon for Michigan State—the Spartans scored three unanswered goals and held Penn State scoreless for 40 minutes. After outscoring the Nittany Lions 17-12 in the second quarter, MSU held a comfortable 32-24 lead in shots.
Colin Ralph scored the lone goal in the second quarter on his first touchdown for the Spartans.

Both teams had a pair of power play opportunities in the second quarter, but continued to commit penalties. MSU goaltender Trey Augustine has played hockey stopping all 23 PSU shots so far.

It was only a matter of time before Michigan State scored again—the Spartans dominated the second quarter, outscoring PSU 13-5 in the second quarter.
Sophomore guard Colin Ralph scored his first goal for the Spartans, beating Fleming in traffic to give Michigan State a three-goal lead.

Michigan State controlled the game for the first four minutes of the second quarter, outscoring the Nittany Lions 7-0 as the Spartans looked to extend their lead.
But don’t count out Penn State. Charlie Serrato nearly scored PSU’s first goal of the game, barely clearing one of the posts.

This period was almost equal, and MSBH won slightly with a score of 15-12. But the offense worked in Michigan’s favor, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Charlie Stramel opened the scoring early in the game with a pass from Josh Fleming on the wing, and Porter assisted Martone’s goal late in the game.

Game 2 was a continuation of yesterday’s game, with plenty of post-whistle buzz and extracurricular activities. But the power plays continued as both teams were kept off the scoresheet over the weekend. In the first quarter, PSU had two PPs and MSU had one, but neither could convert on the man advantage.
The second generation of action is live out of East Lansing.

Penn State destroyed the first MSU power play of the day. Neither PP scored this weekend and it wasn’t for lack of chances.
After another brawl at center ice, Penn State MSU’s Patrick Geary returned to the power play after receiving a minor penalty for headbutting.

The Spartans destroyed Penn State’s first power play and held the NIttany Lions’ PP scoreless last weekend. MSU would get its first chance on the man advantage today when Reese Laubach drove to the box for a layup.

It didn’t take long for the Spartans to get on the board as the MSU standout opened the scoring just 2:31 into the game.
In the rush, Charlie Stramel scored his fourth goal of the season with a wrist shot past Josh Fleming, assisted by Porter Martone and Matt Basgall.

Penn State would get a chance to tie it with an early power play as Martone was called for an interference penalty moments later.

Michigan State wins the opening toss and we head to East Lansing.
The physicality of Game 1 continues this afternoon as the two teams go head-to-head just 56 seconds after the whistle.
