The President of the Republic will preside over the last meeting of the Council of Ministers before ceasing his duties, on Thursday (5), which will focus on the Portuguese language and Lusophony, the PTRR and the geopolitical situation.
The information was transmitted to Lusa by a source in the Prime Minister’s office, Luís Montenegro.
The meeting will take place at the official residence of the head of Government, in São Bento, and is scheduled to start at 10:30.
At the end, there will be a greeting session between the President of the Republic and the entire Government, ministers and secretaries of State, followed by a lunch for two between Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luís Montenegro.
Marcelo will cease his duties next Monday, March 9, the date on which the new President of the Republic, António José Seguro, will take office before the Assembly of the Republic.
The President of the Republic had already confirmed on Friday, in Brussels, that he would preside over a meeting of the Council of Ministers.
On the occasion, he said that it is a tradition for the President of the Republic to preside over the last meeting of the Council of Ministers both when he himself leaves office and when the Prime Minister ceases his duties, remembering that In March 2024, he presided over the last Council of Ministers of António Costa’s government before he left office.
In 2016, António Costa made a similar invitation to Aníbal Cavaco Silva, at the end of his presidential term, with at that time a Council of Ministers exclusively dedicated to maritime affairs, which took place at the São Julião da Barra Fort, in Oeiras, in the Lisbon district.
According to article 133 of the Constitution, it is part of the President of the Republic’s powers to “preside over the Council of Ministers, when the Prime Minister requests it”.
