Military plane crash in Bolivia leaves at least 11 dead

The national airport administration of Bolivia reported that a Hercules military plane crashed during landing at the El Alto airport in La Paz, leaving at least 11 people dead in the accident.

According to the Central Bank of Bolivia, the plane was transporting bills in national currency.

“Six people have died” at the airport “and in another quadrant (place) five more people,” said a spokesperson for the institution, interviewed by a state television channel.

The first reports issued by the state agency Air Navigation and Bolivian Airports (Naabol) indicated that the “Bolivian Air Force aircraft (…) from the city of Santa Cruz” caused the accident at the air terminal.

Unitel television showed images of the remains of the aircraft on a street in the city of El Alto, as well as damaged cars and trucks.

Some local media reported that the police dispersed with tear gas citizens who approached the scene of the accident to take the tickets that the plane was carrying and that were left in good condition after the accident.

For its part, the Central Bank asked citizens to return the money, as they warned it will not have legal tender value.
