Discover the Rules and Participation through the SNS

Compounded medicines may not be “so talked about” in Portugal, as Brazilians usually say, but they not only exist but are also a regulated option with the possibility of co-participation by the National Health Service (SNS).

The National Authority for Medicines and Health Products (Infarmed), similar to Anvisa in Brazil, is the entity that regulates the manufacture and sale of compounded products and defines two classifications: masterful formulas, when they are prepared according to a medical prescription for the patient, or office preparations, when they follow standardized pharmaceutical indications.

According to Infarmed, the doctor who prescribes a masterful formula must be sure of its safety and effectiveness, checking the possibility of interactions with other substances. “The responsibility for verifying the safety of the prescribed compounded medicine is shared by the pharmacist who prepares it”, says the entity, and, in case of doubts, the two professionals must be in direct contact to resolve the issue.

One of the obligations of pharmacists is to ensure that there is no substance in the formula that is banned in Portugal.
