Portugal launches ‘Travel to Europe’ app to speed up border control

“Travel to Europe” is the new app launched to speed up border control of passengers from third countries. According to a statement released this Tuesday, March 17, the objective is to make “the most efficient entry process”. Initially, the application will be used at Lisbon Airport.

“The application was developed within the scope of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which aims to make controls at external borders faster, more modern and efficient for travelers from third countries”, the statement reads. The new system came into effect last fall and caused longer delays for passengers at the borders — so much so that it was suspended in December, after queues lasting more than seven hours.

With “Travel to Europe”, travelers will be able to register up to 72 hours before their trip. It will be necessary to enter personal data and “answer a brief questionnaire about the conditions of entry into European territory”. At the end, a QR code is generated, which can be used at self-service border control kiosks (SSK), when available upon arrival in Portugal.

Use is optional, that is, it will not be mandatory. “Although use of the app is optional and does not replace normal border control procedures, allows part of the necessary information to be processed in advance, making the experience of entering Europe simpler and more efficientboth for travelers and authorities responsible for border control”, highlights the statement.

A app and free and available for iOS and Android. The statement sent on the topic is signed and issued jointly by the Internal Security System (SSI), the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), in conjunction with the Government.
