Zelensky wished Seguro “success”. The two spoke about the participation of Portuguese companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine

The Ukrainian president stated this Monday, March 16, that he spoke with António José Seguro and congratulated him on his victory in the presidential elections. The two leaders spoke about the possibility of “joint manufacturing of weapons” and the participation of Portuguese companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine, said Volodymyr Zelensky.

Later, the President of the Republic issued a note also reporting on the telephone conversation he had this afternoon with his Ukrainian counterpart, to whom he conveyed the “continuous and unwavering support of Portugal and the Portuguese people for Ukraine”.

Seguro told Zelensky “of the largely majority feeling in Portugal of deep admiration for the remarkable resilience and courage demonstrated by the Ukrainian people”, but no note published on the Presidency website.

It was also mentioned that the “President of the Republic conveyed the strong desire that a comprehensive, fair and lasting peace, based on respect for the Charter of the United Nations, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, can be achieved very soon, as well as support for Ukraine in its process of accession to the European Union”.

Also according to the note from Belém, Zelensky thanked “Portugal’s strong support for Ukraine and the reaffirmation of its continuity, highlighting the importance of strong security guarantees and any help that can be given, including within the framework of its reconstruction”.

The Ukrainian head of state “thanked the support for the EU accession process and welcomed the excellent bilateral relations and the warm welcome to the broad Ukrainian community in Portugal”, according to the Presidency of the Republic.

“I personally congratulated the president of Portugal, António José Seguro, on his electoral victory and wished him success”, announced the Ukrainian president in a message shared on social media.

Zelensky stated that “Portugal has been a strong ally since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion” and welcomed “the assurance that defense, financial, humanitarian and political assistance will continue”. “We are also grateful for Portugal’s participation in the PURL initiative and we look forward to new contributions”, he reinforced. The Ukrainian president was referring to the Priority Requirements List for Ukraine (PURL), which consists of urgent military aid.

Seguro, who took office as president of the Republic on March 9, and Zelensky also talked about Portugal’s involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

“We discussed the possibility of joint manufacturing of weapons, the participation of Portuguese companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine”, detailed.

Ukraine’s “path” to joining the European Union was also a topic in the conversation between the two leaders. “Thank you for the clear position on our European future”, said Zelensky.
