On March 5, the United States and the interim government of Venezuela headed by Delcy Rodríguez, who was Maduro’s vice president at the time of his capture on January 3, agreed to reestablish diplomatic and consular relations.
“This morning, March 14, 2026, at the same time, my team and I raised the flag of the United States, exactly seven years after it was retired,” said chargé d’affaires Laura Dogu in a message on the embassy’s X account.
The American flag was removed on March 14, 2019 from the embassy in Caracas.
“A new era has begun for relations between the United States and Venezuela. We continue with Venezuela,” the text added.
Donald Trump and the interim president of Venezuela have signed energy and mining agreements since January that open the door to private investment and modify the statist model applied by the late Hugo Chávez.
The day before, Rodríguez asked for the cessation of US sanctions applied to oil and other businesses. The Trump administration, for its part, has eased some sanctions after Maduro’s capture that favor oil and mining activities.
Rodríguez also announced an amnesty for political prisoners under pressure from Washington.
