The defeat dictated the Portuguese woman’s withdrawal from the race and ended up putting an end to her aspirations of qualifying for this season’s Championship Tour.
The outcome once again crosses Bonvalot’s competitive path with that of Sophie McCulloch. In 2022, both had finished the Challenger Series tied in the annual ranking, but the Australian benefited from the tiebreaker criteria and secured the last place to access the world circuit, leaving the Portuguese once again very close to achieving the goal.
Despite the elimination in Newcastle, Teresa Bonvalot once again closes the qualifying circuit season among the most consistent surfers in the Challenger Seriesfinishing very close to the qualifying zone and confirming her status as one of the main European athletes on the world elite access circuit.
The Portuguese presence on the women’s Championship Tour is, however, guaranteed through two surfers who secured qualification in previous stages of the circuit. Yolanda Hopkins finished the Challenger Series as runner-up, while Francisca Veselko occupies fourth place in the ranking In the end, results that allowed them to secure a place among the best surfers in the world in advance.
The two Portuguese women will now prepare their debut on the Championship Tour, whose 2026 season begins between April 1st and 11th, with the traditional Bells Beach stage, in the Australian state of Victoria. Integrating the world top 24, Hopkins and Veselko will aim to finish the season among the top ranked teams in the rankinga position that guarantees presence in the decisive phase of the fight for the world title and also ensures automatic requalification for the following season.
In the men’s sector, Portugal will not have representatives on the world circuit. Frederico Morais and Afonso Antunes participated in the Challenger Series throughout the season, but were unable to finish the ranking in positions that would allow access to the Championship Tour.
With the end of the Newcastle stage, the Challenger Series season also ends, a circuit that serves as the main gateway to the world’s surfing elite.
