David Gilmour’s Black Strat Guitar Could Be About to Break a New Record

It was the most expensive guitar in the world when it was sold at auction in 2019, but when it was auctioned by the Jim Irsay Collection. However, there are several reasons to believe that David Gilmour’s Black Strat will capture another record.

Once again up for auction at Christie’s, the guitar that the British musician used in The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Herenumerous memorable concerts and on the album Comfortably Numb could surpass the almost four million dollars (around 3.5 million euros) it cost American businessman Jim Irsay on June 20, 2019.

“No one anticipated the huge excitement this would cause among fans and collectors – who are often the same people. I think we had around 19 different bids for that guitar, many of which continued to bid up to a very, very high value,” head specialist of private and iconic collections at Christie’s, quoted by the portal Guitar World.

“For many people, [a Stratocaster preta] is the [peça central] from the Irsay Collection and David Gilmour’s business card – his look is so unmistakable. I spoke to a lot of people about it and many of them think it will reach an even higher value this time, which is really interesting,” added the person in charge.

Manufactured between 1968 and 1969, the guitar has a black painted sunburst finish and was originally equipped with a late 60s maple neck, with a large headstock and 21 frets.

However, during his most famous studio recordings, the guitar began to have a rosewood neck, a configuration with which it appeared on the albums The Dark Side Of The Moon e Wish You Were Here.
