Carlos Courelas

We deviate a little from the story or move too quickly. We were at PREC, in the middle of Hot Summer, when young Carlos Courelas started working. Founded in 1917, Caixa de Pombal, in those revolutionary times, operated with just two workers in a small office. It was really a great journey.

His wife accompanied him on the adventure. She worked in a neighboring box before being transferred to Pombal. I had a commercial accounting and administration course, but I didn’t want to stop there, I thought it was too little.

He graduated in Law and Carlos Courelas’ successes were also his, the delivery of one was the delivery of the other. A path taken by two.

Like marriage.

Growth was rapid.

Courelas benefited from the growth of the industry in Pombal, the resins business had a huge impact on the transition from the 1980s to the 90s. A huge change compared to what it found in 1975 when the city depended on a primary sector where wheat, corn, rice and milk were mainly produced.

A minifundio that was not enough for the economy to grow and Caixa to stop being a stagnant project.

The growing weight of industry resulted in the multiplication of services, the expansion of activity, the increase in loans and agencies. Carlos started out doing cashier work, but soon became responsible for accounting. From 1981 onwards, the boxes were no longer under the jurisdiction of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, and Pombal grew more than anyone had ever thought possible.
