Hugo Soares says he “doesn’t care” about being seen as a “right-wing populist” over immigration regulation

The PSD parliamentary leader defended that the Government has been making “a peaceful change” for two years, with the “adherence of the Portuguese”, and which he said is “stripped of ideology”, neither left nor right. Hugo Soares was speaking at the opening of the PSD’s parliamentary days, which run until Wednesday in Caminha (Viana do Castelo), attended by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim, a former deputy for this circle.

The PSD leader recalled that today, March 10, two years have passed since the first victory that took the party back to the leadership of the Government, considering that, since that time, “a peaceful change” began in the country in areas such as health, education, housing. At a time when there were critical interventions by former PSD Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho asking for more reforms from the government, Hugo Soares argued that the changes made by the current executive “have the support of the Portuguese”.

“The changes that we are making, many of them offer resistance, many of them encounter, as usual, their obstacles, their blockages even, but we are making them with those who truly matter, we are making them with the people”, he defended. On the other hand, the PSD leader considered that the current executive led by Luís Montenegro has made “a change devoid of ideology”.

“It’s not a change from either the left or the right. If you want to call me a dangerous leftist because we increased the solidarity supplement for the elderly three times, I don’t mind at all. And if you want to call me a right-wing populist because we regulate immigration, I don’t mind at all either”, he summarized.
