CP – Comboios de Portugal signs this Tuesday, March 10, an addendum to the contract signed with Alstom-DST in October 2025 that increases the number of trains to be purchased by 36 units, reinforcing investment by 318 million eurosannounces the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing in a statement.
“These 36 additional railcars for urban service are added to the 117 in the base contract, which already included 55 trains for regional service and 62 for urban service, worth 746 million euros”, says the ministry led by Miguel Pinto Luz.
With this addition, the ministry highlights, CP’s total investment in new rolling stock rises to 1,064 million euros for a set of 153 railcars, financed by 710.1 million euros from the State Budget, 141.1 million from Sustainable 2030 and 212.5 million from the Environmental Fund.
The last delivery of trains is also brought forward by two years, moving from 2033 to 2031.
The Ministry of Infrastructure also informs that it has authorized CP to purchase 20 trains for the High Speed network, worth 584 million eurosincreasing global investment in railways to 1.8 billion euros, corresponding to the purchase of 195 units. This value also includes the 22 railcars for the regional service contracted with Stadler for 158 million euros, the first unit of which arrived in Portugal at the end of last year.
The Government says that the new Alstom-DST trains will begin arriving in 2029, and that “they will also have national production, as the contract establishes the installation of a workshop in Matosinhos” which will create around 300 direct jobs.
