Retail Sales Grow 2.1% in January, According to INE

The trade turnover index increased 2.1% in January compared to the same month in 2025, accelerating compared to the 1.6% growth seen in December, reveals this Monday, March 2, the National Statistics Institute (INE).

By sector, trade, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles went from an annual contraction of 6.0% in December to growth of 3.7% in January.

Wholesale trade (excluding vehicles) reversed the trend, falling 0.2% after an increase of 2.9% in the previous month.

Retail trade (also excluding vehicles) accelerated to +4.6% annually, with food product groups growing by 4.2% and non-food products by 4.9% (compared to 0.7% and 4.3% in December, respectively).

The employment index in commerce registered an annual variation of +0.4% in January, identical to that of December. Remunerations grew 5.2% in annual terms, below the 5.8% observed in the previous month.

In monthly terms, the total index went from growing 1.8% in December to falling 1.4% in January.

The monthly change in employment was -1.6% and in wages -16.1% (comparable to -1.6% and -15.6% in January 2025).
