Without directly referring to the US and Israeli bombings that, among other senior figures of the Tehran regime, killed Ayatollah Ali Khameineisupreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Mariana Leitão defended that, in addition to the “uncompromising defense” of Human Rights, “Portugal must be aligned with European partners in the protection of its strategic interests, without giving in to narratives that seek to whitewash the oppressive and murderous nature of the Iranian regime”.
Noting that it is up to the Portuguese State to ensure that all citizens residing in the region are protected and can return safely, taking into account the bombings in Iran and the retaliations of the Tehran regime, with missiles fired at neighboring countries, Mariana Leitão maintains her position against the “brutal repression exercised by the Islamic regime” and highlights that IL “stands alongside the Iranian people, who have sacrificed their own lives in the fight against a theocratic regime, which lives on fear, censorship and institutionalized violence.”
