Israel announced this Monday that it had registered several missiles launched from Lebanon against areas in the north of the country, attacks claimed by the Shiite group Hezbollah, in a context of regional war escalation after Israel and the United States attacked Iran.
Several alerts were activated in northern Israel after the attacks, shortly after midnight (10pm on Sunday in Lisbon), according to information released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the Telegram messaging platform.
The IDF assured that they were responding with bombings on Lebanese territory.
“The Air Force intercepted a projectile that crossed from Lebanon (…) No damage or casualties were reported”, announced the Israeli army, noting that other projectiles fell in open areas.
Hezbollah later claimed responsibility for the attacks, which were aimed at south of Haifa, according to a statement from the group, published by media outlets including Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera.
According to this information, the Shiite group attacked Israel “in revenge for the blood of Imam Khamenei.”
“Our response is self-defense,” he added.
The IDF assured that it was responding to these attacks “vigorously” with bombings directed against “the terrorist organization Hezbollah throughout Lebanon”, which it accused of “operating under the auspices of the Iranian terrorist regime”.
“The IDF was prepared for this scenario as part of combat operations under Operation Lion’s Roar”, as they named the joint attack with the United States against Iran on Saturday.
This exchange of fire and accusations occurs in a context of regional war escalation following the bombing by Israel and the United States against Iran, which caused the death of the Iranian supreme leader, the ‘ayatollah’ Ali Khamenei, as well as several senior military officers, leaving a total toll of more than 200 fatalities.
Israel regularly bombs Lebanon with the aim of weakening the Shiite group Hezbollah, an ally of Iran.
Iran, in turn, bombed Israel, causing nine deaths, and countries allied with the United States in the region where Washington maintains military bases, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where it also left three fatalities.
Portugal, France, Germany and the United Kingdom condemned Iranian attacks on neighboring countries.
