Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines suspend flights to the Middle East due to tensions

The Turkish airline Turkish Airlines also suspended this Saturday, the 28th, flights to ten countries in the Middle East.

“Flights to Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Jordan have been canceled until March 2nd,” a company spokesperson wrote on social media.

This airline’s flights to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman have also been suspended, but for now, only today, February 28th.

Contacted by the Lusa agency, An official TAP source said that, at the moment, it has no flights to Israel, having announced in December that it planned to resume, at the end of March, connections to Tel Aviv, suspended since October 2023during the attacks by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas that triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.

This Saturday morning, the United States and Israel began a joint attack on Iran, which reached the capital, Tehran.

North American President Donald Trump announced that the United States (USA) has begun “major combat operations in Iran” and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attack aims to “eliminate an existential threat posed” by the Iranian regime.

Iran has already responded, however, by launching missiles at the US military base in Bahrain.

Tehran also tried to attack Qatar, which managed to intercept the missiles.

The attack by the US and Israel comes two days after the last round of negotiations with Iran over the Iranian nuclear program, with new talks scheduled for next week.

Washington demands that Iran cease uranium enrichment and limit the range of its missiles, which Tehran refuses, accepting only cuts to its nuclear program in exchange for the suspension of current sanctions.
