Iran attacks US bases in the Gulf in response to joint Israeli-US offensive

Iran is retaliating against several US military installations in the Middle East. Tehran launched simultaneous missiles that appear to target Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Al Salem Base in Kuwait, Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, and the US Fifth Fleet Base in Bahrain.

Bahrain confirmed that a US base in the country was hit in a “missile attack”, and explosions were also heard in the capital, following Israeli and US air strikes against Iran.

“A Quinta Frota service center [dos EUA] was the target of a missile attack,” said Bahrain’s official news agency, BNA.

“We urge the public to follow instructions issued by official authorities and to obtain information from official sources,” he added.

The Fifth Fleet is the United States naval contingent deployed in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea.

The attack was carried out by Iran and, according to Iranian state radio, IRIB, it was the first response to the joint US-Israel operation against its centers of power in Tehran and other parts of the country.

Several explosions were heard in Riyadh today. Two journalists from the AFP news agency at the scene reported hearing a loud bang followed by several explosions in the capital of Saudi Arabia.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed the launch of attacks against US bases located in Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, in retaliation for the bombings against Iran, without mentioning Saudi Arabia.

The United States and Israel launched this Saturday, the 28th, a joint attack against Iran, which reached the capital, Tehran, where large columns of smoke are visible.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced that his country had begun “major combat operations in Iran” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attack aims to “eliminate an existential threat posed” by the Iranian regime.

This attack comes two days after the last round of negotiations between the United States and Iran over the Iranian nuclear program. Washington demands that Iran cease uranium enrichment and limit the range of its missiles, which Tehran refuses, accepting only cuts to its nuclear program in exchange for the suspension of current sanctions.
