Two-Day Program in Arganil, Guimarães and Porto

The inauguration of António José Seguro as President of the Republic will have a two-day program, extended to Arganil, Guimarães and Porto, with initiatives that reflect the priorities and aims of his mandate.

According to a note sent to the Lusa agency by the President-elect’s communications department, after the formal inauguration before the Assembly of the Republic, on the morning of March 9, António José Seguro will open the gardens of the Belém Palace to the population and will have a meeting with young people at a university in Lisbon.

On March 10, the new head of state will continue the program in other regions of Portugal, passing through the village of Mourísia, in the municipality of Arganil, district of Coimbra, which was surrounded by flames in 2025, and through Guimarãesin the district of Braga.

The program ends that day with a musical concert in the city of Porto, where the President of the Republic will be received at the City Hall, indicates the same note.

António José Seguro visited Mourísia last summer and at the time he spoke about this visit on CNN Portugal, mentioning how impressed he was to see a national flag next to a burnt sign, and stated that “people from the interior deserve as much dignity as people from the coast”.

The elected President of the Republic wanted to innovate and expand his inauguration program to other regions, including the interior and the city of Guimarães, which is the European Green Capital in 2026, and reach out to younger generations to discuss the country’s future.

In this way, it aims to value youth, raise awareness of the importance of sustainability and combating climate change and defend the quality of life throughout the national territory.

Under the terms of the Constitution, the elected President takes office before parliament making the following declaration of commitment: “I swear on my honor to faithfully perform the functions in which I am invested and to defend, comply with and enforce the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic”.

After reading and signing the instrument of inauguration, the President of the Assembly of the Republic speaks, followed by the first intervention of the new President of the Republic.

Normally, the inauguration program for heads of state also passes through the Jerónimos Monastery, for the laying of a wreath on Camões’ tomb, and includes a reception at the Ajuda National Palace.

António José Seguro, former general secretary of the PS, was elected president of the Republic in the second round of the presidential elections, on February 8, in which he obtained around 67% of the votes cast, against André Ventura, president of Chega.
