Benfica suspends five members who imitated monkeys in the game against Real Madrid

Disciplinary proceedings may lead to the application of the maximum sanction provided for in the Statutes: expulsion.

The “inappropriate behaviors on the bench, of a racist nature”, are “incompatible with the values and principles that govern the Club”, stresses Benfica in a statement published on its official website.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica reaffirms that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to act firmly whenever behaviors that violate the values of the Club, sport and society are at stake”you can read.

In order to know the identity of the individuals, the Rio club used a complex tracking process.

It is worth noting that Real Madrid presented images to UEFA of Benfica fans carrying out racist demonstrations during the recent Champions League game, marked by the episode between Prestianni and Vinícius Júnior.

In that game, in the first leg of the play-off for access to the round of 16 of the Champions League, at Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, the striker from Real Madrid and the Brazilian team, after celebrating the goal scored, reported to referee François Letexier offenses allegedly made by Argentine Gianluca Prestianni, a Benfica player.

The referee activated FIFA’s anti-racism protocol, momentarily interrupting the game and informing the stadium.

The activation of the protocol triggered a series of racist reactions from some fans, who offended the Brazilian player by playing monkey sounds.
