PJ arrests octogenarian for trying to shoot neighbor in Barcelos

An 83-year-old man was arrested in Barcelos on suspicion of two crimes of attempted qualified murder with the use of a firearm, two crimes of aggravated threat and one crime of possession of a prohibited weapon. At issue are threats using firearms and shooting at neighbors from the roof. This octogenarian has a criminal record, for offenses against physical integrity, which resulted in the death of a person, in France.

“The attempted murders occurred on the 9th and 14th of May 2025, dates on which the suspect, climbing to the roof of his house, fired, each time, two shots towards his neighbor who was building a house there, passing the projectiles centimeters from his head”, says the Judiciary Police (PJ) in a statement.

At the time of the last incident, the man was detained by the GNR and a long-barreled gun and ammunition of different types and calibers were seized. Present at judicial interrogation, he claimed to have used an alarm weapon and was subject to non-custodial precautionary measures. “The processing of the investigation was transferred to the Specialized Violent Crime Section of Cuiabá and the investigation was delegated to the Judiciary Police”, says the press release.

However, according to the PJ, in mid-October 2025 and, more recently, on February 19, the suspect climbed onto the roof of the house again and threatened the neighbor and his wife with death.

“As criminal activity continued and there were well-founded fears that the suspect could make another attempt on the lives of his neighbors”, new search and seizure warrants were requested and issued for the addresses and vehicles to which he had access.

Upon the octogenarian’s arrest, three firearms, two shotguns and a rifle were seized, as well as hundreds of ammunition of different types and calibers.

The detainee will be presented to the judicial authority, at the Judicial Court of Guimarães, for the application of appropriate coercive measures.
