Itamar Vieira Júnior is arriving in Portugal for a literary tour of the country. The award-winning Brazilian writer will have autograph sessions in seven Portuguese cities, including Lisbon and Porto.
“It is a kind of literary return to Portugal, which Dom Quixote prepared for Itamar Vieira Junior, just a few days before his return to socializing with Portuguese readers to introduce them to his most recent novel”, highlights the publisher Dom Quixote. The book Heart without Fear arrived in Portuguese bookstores last month.
The Brazilian’s agenda in Portugal begins in Póvoa de Varzim, at the Correntes d’Escritas festival, from February 24th to 28th. Itamar will be one of the big names at the literary event, alongside other international writers.
At the beginning of March, the sessions take place in the Lisbon region: on the 1st, at the Indie bookstore, in Cascais; on the 2nd, at the Cervantes bookstore, in Lisbon — both at 6:30 pm. The following day, March 3rd, it will be the Saudade bookstore’s turn, at 6pm. Still in Lisbon, on March 4th, the writer will meet readers at the Buchholz bookstore, at 6:30 pm. The tour of the region ends the following day, March 5th, at the Culsete bookstore, also at 6:30 pm, in Setúbal.

After, the Bahian heads to the North of the country. On the night of March 6th, he signs autographs at the legendary Lello bookstore, in Porto, at 9pm. The meetings end in Guimarães, at the Húmus festival, at 5pm.
The relationship with Portugal
The Brazilian writer won the LeYa Prize in 2018 with the book Crooked Plow. It was the beginning of the partnership with the publisher, which launched the work in Portugal the following year, in 2019.
“I’m happy to be able to meet readers and friends on the other side of the Atlantic, where my career as a writer gained prominence. Without the LeYa Prize, perhaps the history of these books would have taken a different path”, he wrote on social media.
Beloved in Portugal by Brazilians and Portuguese, Itamar is considered one of the most important names in contemporary Brazilian literature. An agronomist by training, his works address themes such as social inequality, memory, land and identity in rural Brazil.
