Damage in high-performance centers affected by recent storms amounts to almost four million euros (ME), the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports announced in parliament today.
“Unfortunately, the news is not good. We – myself and the Secretary of State [Pedro Dias] –, on Monday, we will go to Montemor-o-Velho, whose reported damage is around 2,286,000 euros. In the case of Jamor, a loss of more than 500,000 euros, in the case of Rio Maior, damages of more than half a million euros, in the case of Peniche, 296,000 euros, and in the case of Golegã, 164,000 euros. (…) Almost 4 ME in these centers alone”said Margarida Balseiro Lopes, during the Culture, Communication, Youth and Sports Committee.
Several storms have hit mainland Portugal since the end of January, the most violent being Depression Kristin, on January 28th.
The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cut of energy, water and communications, are the main material consequences of the storm.
Margarida Balseiro Lopes said that Sport “is enshrined in the PTRR (Portugal Transformation, Recovery and Resilience)” and that the “work is being done in partnership” with local authorities and the Regional Coordination and Development Commissions (CCDR), responsible for surveying the damage caused to municipal facilities, clubs and associations.
The minister also stated that the National Sports Development Plan (PNDD) is fulfilling all the planned stages.
The PNDD, approved two months ago, has already executed around 62 MEs.
“Two months after its approval, the plan is already on the ground, with around 62 ME already in execution. Program contracts have already been signed for the requalification of 10 high-performance centers across the country”said Margarida Balseiro Lopes.
