A man was shot dead after entering the security perimeter of US President Donald Trump’s residence in Florida, the US secret services said this Sunday, February 22. US intelligence said the man was “observed at the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a can of fuel.”
The man was shot and killed by Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy, they added. Although Trump usually spends weekends at Mar-a-Lago, the US President was at the White House in Washington during the incident, along with the first lady, Melania Trump, according to the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
The suspect, around 20 years old and from the state of North Carolina, was reported missing a few days ago by his family, the AP said. Investigators said they believe the man left North Carolina and drove southeast, acquiring a rifle along the way, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
The gun box was found in the vehicle, he said. The man passed through the north gate of Mar-a-Lago as another vehicle was leaving and was confronted by intelligence agents and was shot dead, Guglielmi added.
The incident occurred at 01:30 (06:00 in Lisbon) and the name of the person killed was not released. The White House has not yet commented on the situation.
