Two-year-old boy dies after being transplanted with damaged heart

A two-year-old boy died this Saturday, February 21, at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, Italy, after being in critical condition for several days following a heart transplant.

The case shocked Italian society, as the heart, which was received by the boy Domenico on December 23, was damaged during the eight-hour journey between Bolzano and Naples due to the fact that the transport had not been carried out properly.

The child had been connected to an ECMO (a machine that temporarily replaces the heart) for two months, and in recent days hopes had grown that the child would receive another heart from another donor, but he ended up not resisting due to complications in his health.

The child’s parents have already filed a complaint with the Italian authorities, with the Public Prosecutor’s Office confirming that the organ was not preserved in the way clinical standards recommend.

The case is under investigation, and the six doctors who were involved in this transplant are currently considered suspects.
