Arrests in Alvalade and Luz lead FPF to request a meeting with the Government

A Portuguese Football Federation will request a meeting from the Government to discuss urgent measures to combat violenceafter the incidents before the Sporting-Benfica futsal match, showing concern about the increase in episodes of violence.

Meeting on Friday in Leiria, the FPF Management expressed a “growing concern” about the increase in episodes of intolerance and violence in and around sports venues. The highlighted that the hearing with the Government should take place as soon as the new holder of the portfolio is defined.

The body led by Pedro Proença considers it “urgent” to discuss with the government the review of the Law to Combat Violence in Sports. The FPF also defends the worsening of sanctions in episodes of violence, covering all levels, “from district football to professional”.

The decision comes following the incidents that occurred on Thursday, before the Portuguese futsal championship game between Sporting and Benfica, with the FPF considering it urgent to adopt measures that contribute to increasing safety, FairPlay and respect. The Federation’s Management also reiterated that combating violence is a priority that it will not give up, arguing that this responsibility must be shared by everyone who has the obligation to protect the image of Portuguese football.

On Thursday, the PSP made 124 arrests near the José Alvalade Stadium and the João Rocha Pavilhão, in Lisbon. The suspects were released overnight after being charged and subject to an Identity and Residence Term (TIR), as the crimes in question carry a sentence of less than four years.

During the period of provisional detention, authorities separated the groupskeeping Sporting fans in provisional detention cells next to the Alvalade Stadium and transporting those from Benfica to the cells that the PSP has inside the Estádio da Luz. These incidents, which occurred before the 2-2 draw in the 16th round of the Futsal League, led the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to launch an investigation to determine responsibilities.

On Friday, the 63 Benfica fans detained following the clashes began to be heard in court. The hearing of the 61 detainees linked to Sporting is scheduled for Monday.
