The balance of travel and tourism grew by 1.1 billion euros in 2025, reaching 22 billion euros, the highest nominal value in the series, announced this Thursday, February 19, the Bank of Portugal (BdP).
Last year, expenditure by foreign tourists in Portugal grew by 5%, above that of Portuguese tourists in other countries, which increased by 4.5% in annual terms.
Tourist revenue in Portugal reached 29,131 million euros, while Portuguese expenditure abroad was 7,155 million euros, in 2025.
The balance thus reached 22 billion euros, a record value in the statistical series started in 1948, which represents 7.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to the BdP highlight, “those responsible for Portugal’s largest tourist revenues were tourists residing in the United Kingdom (4.3 billion euros), Germany (3.4 billion euros) and France (3.2 billion euros)”.
The data released today by the BdP are values for the annual rate of change, both for spending by foreign tourists in Portugal (also called exports or credits), and for spending by residents in Portugal when traveling to other countries (also called imports or debits).
