The Mexican government has entered a new cell phone owner into a registry, a company that tries to link every cell phone number to the identity of its owner, to curb the country’s growing wave of extortion and fraud. With the process active, thousands of users are asking what the real requirements are and who will go through your lines if they are not met before the time limit.
OBJECTIVE: STOP TELEPHONE EXTORTION IN MEXICO
According to the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), this mandatory registry responds to a national security crisis. INEGI (ENVIPE) data shows that extortion is one of the most common crimes and more than 90% of cases take place over the phone, ensuring the anonymity of prepaid lines.
With this regulation, Mexico joins the list of 155 countries that require a mandatory SIM card registry to guarantee transparency and reduce crime rates.
WILL BIOMETRIC CURP BE MANDATORY IN 2026?
One of the biggest doubts among Telcel, AT&T and Movistar users is the use of the new biometric CURP to register on your mobile phone.
The answer is no. Although some companies accept this as a valid identification option, it is not a mandatory requirement. Citizens can fill out the register using one of the following official documents:
- Current official identification (INE).
- Door passage.
- Traditional CURP.
- Photo of the owner (in certain cases).
Important note: If you are on a rental (postage) plan, it is likely that your company will keep your records, but it is recommended that you check with your supplier to avoid any surprises.
CLAVE FEATURES AND CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE TO REGISTER
The process started on January 9, 2026, and it took users several months to get to this point. This can be done in person at customer centers or remotely through web portals and helplines.
- Range Limit: June 30, 2026.
- How do I register?: Starting July 1, all lines will be unregistered to the owner suspended in definitive form. Users will only be able to make emergency calls until they complete the unlocking process.
HOW DO I SAFE REGISTRY?
In order to avoid new stages during this process, the authorities recommend to carry out the procedure exclusively through the official channels of the operators:
- Customer care centers (Full-time).
- The official app your telephone company.
- Verified web portals.
The goal of this national effort is to provide users with security and ensure that mobile service is a trusted item and not an avenue for crime.
