Marco Rubio tests the Castros’ inner circle

The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubiomaintains secret conversations with Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castrograndson of Raul Castroamidst the pressure of Washington on Havanaas revealed by the American media Axios based on three anonymous sources.

The contacts, which bypass the official channels of the Cuban government, occur while the president Donald Trump describes the island as a “bankrupt nation” and affirms that there are dialogues “at the highest level”, without offering details.

According to the report, The head of US diplomacy – son of Cuban parents – talks directly with the 94-year-old former president’s entouragewhom the Republican administration considers the true center of power, despite his formal retirement.

A senior official stated that It’s not so much about “negotiations.” as “discussions” about the future. Washington maintains that “the regime has to disappear”although the form will depend on Trump’s final decision. The secretary has not contacted the president Miguel Diaz-Canel nor to other senior officials, seen as operators without room for change.

The talks are taking place in a context of economic asphyxiation for the island. In January, The United States imposed an oil blockade after the seizure of Venezuelan exports that supplied Cuba. The power grid is facing failure, hospitals are limiting surgeries and fuel is in short supply.
