Without UGT, “in practice there was no meeting”. Bosses available to negotiate labor law from next week but there is no date yet

The ‘bosses’ stated this Wednesday, February 18th, that they are “interested” in reaching an agreement on the labor law, so without the presence of the UGT at today’s meeting “in practice there was no meeting” and they were available to negotiate for the week.

“In practice, there was no meeting”, said the president of the Portuguese Tourism Confederation (CTP), Francisco Calheiros, after leaving today’s meeting at the Ministry of Labor, speaking on behalf of the remaining three business confederations.

Francisco Calheiros said that the Today’s meeting would be to carry out an “evaluation” of the technical meetings that have taken place between the Government, business confederations and UGT and given that the trade union federation led by Mário Mourão “expressed its unavailability to be at this meeting”, the confederations “transmitted their availability” to negotiate again from next Monday.

The Minister of Labor met this afternoon with the employer confederations to discuss changes to labor legislation, but without the presence of the CGTP, which was not called by the Government, nor the UGT, which announced that it would not participate in the meeting, considering it “untimely” and regretting its disclosure when it informed the Government in good time of its unavailability on this date.

An official source from the ministry had told Lusa that “UGT was invited and did not show availability at any time this week”, but that “the Government remains fully available to talk” with the trade union central.

“The week starts on Monday. From nine in the morning we are available to be here”, reiterated the president of the CTP, also representing the CIP, CAP and CCP, adding that they were “waiting for the Minister to confirm whether, in fact, on Monday, at nine in the morning, the UGT may or may not be [presente] to hold the meeting.”
