Livre, Bloco and PCP against the simplified lay-off regime ask for parliamentary consideration

Diário de Notícias confirmed this Wednesday that the left will unite in criticizing the simplified lay-off regime presented by Luís Montenegro. Bloco de Esquerda, Livre and PCP will ask for the government measure to go through Parliament for explanation to deputies and subsequent validation.

The regime of layoff simplified, announced by the Government of Luís Montenegro in February 2026, was activated as an exceptional measure to support companies and workers affected by severe storms (namely Depression Kristin) that caused high material damage. The Ministry of Labor guaranteed that affected workers would be guaranteed 100% of their normal salary, up to 2760 euros. In this case, “the employer would only pay 20% of the worker’s salary, with Social Security covering the remaining 80%”.

However, the decree-law published in Diário da República, contradicts this information, which in practice would guarantee that workers would receive “two thirds of the salary, with a minimum of 920 euros and a maximum of 2760 euros”.

According to the DN, The PT member also claims 100% maturity as a guarantee and reiterated the importance of extending the state of calamity until June.

The president of the Reconstruction Mission Structure for the Central Region of the Country, Paulo Fernandes, reported that 117 requests for help have been made, which will total approximately 900 workers.
