And, as “the budgets of some municipalities are lower than the losses already calculated at this time”, the leader of Chega admitted his party’s openness to the feasibility of an Amending Budget, as long as it is limited to the effects of bad weather. “It is important to understand that we have municipalities and parishes with an overwhelming level of losses”, he reiterated, noting that there has not yet been “any conversation” with the Government in this regard.
On the contrary, With regard to the left-wing parties’ proposal for the lay-off to be paid 100% in the most affected areas, Ventura recalled that the Government had promised that this would be the caselater falling back to two thirds. “We can’t give people a signal and then do the opposite,” he said.assuming that Chega makes this proposal viable.
Shadow minister criticizes “effectiveness of messages”
The press conference at Chega’s national headquarters allowed the shadow minister of Internal Administration, Fernando Silva, to share the conclusions of a reflection on “one of the biggest crises” experienced in Portugal. Regarding Maria Lúcia Amaral’s resignation, she said that it “revealed signs of weakness, fragility and failure”, admitting that the former person in charge “wanted to escape the scrutiny” of the Assembly of the Republic.
However, Chega’s shadow minister highlighted that the failures were not limited to the former minister, but had to do with the entire Executive, so that “the populations were left alone and left to themselves”.
Admitting that the Government could not “try to contain the storms with its hands”, Fernando Silva questioned the effectiveness of the messages that were sent to the Portuguese before the arrival of the storms and the fact that the Executive did not go “immediately to the affected areas”. “When he did it, he did it late”, added someone who said that, on the part of Chega’s shadow government, “we will never count on criticism in a deconstructive sense, nor on an easy and demolishing speech”.
