Galician chef Lucía Freitas’ declaration of love for Portugal. “It’s tradition, it’s cultural and gastronomic richness”

The chef also pointed out the many similarities between Portugal and Galicia, starting with the language, but also because they are both “land of strong, respected, perfectionist workers, which is why Portugal has the cuisine it has at the moment”.

In April, the chef will be in the country for the Gala Guia Repsol, which will be in Évora, on the 13th, in a ceremony at Teatro Garcia de Resende. This will be the second consecutive edition of the event in Portugal, after returning in 2025, with a ceremony in Santarém, after an absence of nine years.

“Évora knew how to reinvent itself in gastronomy, in the kitchen, and today, it has this combination between authenticity and identity. It is a contemporary inventive cuisine, which makes Évora a great hub of national gastronomy. For us, this gala aims to project Évora as a gastronomic reference on an Iberian and international level.“, stated José Manuel Santos, president of the Regional Tourism Entity of Alentejo and Ribatejo, at a press conference in Tarragona.

At the 2025 gala, which marked its return to the country, Guia Repsol distinguished 194 Portuguese restaurants, of which 70 received one, two or three suns. Last year, Portugal also had 285 establishments distinguished with soletesawards dedicated to restoring everyday life. In total, the Repsol Portugal Guide currently includes 479 restaurants, from North to South of the country and on the islands.

In Spain, the Repsol 2026 Guide distinguished 83 new restaurants, three of which were awarded the Three Suns: in addition to chef Lucía Freitas and her A Tafonain Santiago de Compostela, the Ramón Freixa Atelierin Madrid, from chef Ramón Freixa; the Werein Capdepera (Mallorca), do chef Alvaro Salazar, also received the distinction.
