Landslide in Almada hits three houses and forces 20 people to evacuate

Three homes were buried and 20 people from other nearby homes were relocated due to a new landslide, following bad weather, which occurred this Tuesday, February 17, in Costa da Caparica, municipality of Almada, Civil Protection reported.

The source from the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Setúbal Peninsula told the Lusa agency that the landslide, for which an alert was given at 01:15, affected three homes on Rua Duarte Pacheco Pereira.

The three houses, whose residents had previously been evacuated by authorities, were affected by dirt entering the rooms of the houses, he said.

According to the same source, due to this landslide, 20 residents of other adjacent buildings were removed from their homes and temporarily relocated to the Inatel Foundation campsite.

The relief operations mobilized the Cacilhas Fire Department, the Almada Municipal Civil Protection Service and the GNR.

On Monday, the mayor of Almada, Inês de Medeiros, admitted that many of the people who had to leave their homes in the municipality due to the landslide, following the bad weather, will not be able to return to their homes.

According to the mayor, who spoke at the beginning of the council executive meeting, following the bad weather, 230 people had, until then, been emergency relocated by the municipality.

Teams from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with whom the city hall has a protocol, were called in to monitor the cliffs, he added, explaining that since 2023 the city hall has been working with the FCT to evaluate these locations.

These teams, he continued, will monitor the riverside slope and the entire fossil cliff over the next two years.

On the other hand, the Almada City Council also asked the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) for help.

Since the start of the storms that ravaged Portuguese territory, the municipality of Almada has recorded several landslides on the cliffs of Costa da Caparica and Porto Brandão.

Sixteen people died in Portugal following the passage of depressions Kristin, Leonardo and Marta, which also caused many hundreds of injuries and displacement.

The total or partial destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, the fall of trees and structures, the closure of roads, schools and transport services, and the cut of energy, water and communications, floods and floods are the main material consequences of the storm.

The Centro, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and Alentejo regions were the most affected.

The calamity situation that covered the 68 most affected municipalities ended on Sunday.
