This Tuesday, February 17, the European Commission began a formal investigation into the Chinese company Shein over suspicions of additive design, lack of transparency in recommendations and sale of illegal products in the European Union (EU), including content associated with sexual abuse of minors.
“Today, the European Commission initiated formal proceedings against Shein under the Digital Services Regulation due to the platform’s potentially addictive design, lack of transparency in its recommendation systems, as well as the sale of illegal products, including child sexual abuse material.”indicates the community executive in a statement released in Brussels.
The institution says that the investigation into the Chinese e-commerce platform will focus on the mechanisms implemented by the company to prevent the sale of prohibited products on the European market, namely items that could constitute sexual abuse material against minors, such as dolls with a childish appearance.
In France, Shein was the target of strong controversy after the identification of dolls with characteristics considered sexualized and childish in appearance, which led to criticism, requests for the immediate withdrawal of the products and scrutiny from the authorities regarding possible violations of the rules for the protection of minors and the marketing of illicit content.
