a new shooting interrupted a high school hockey game in Pawtucketa working-class city in the state of Rhode Islandin the New England region. The attack occurred at a local venue used for school competitions and youth leagues, located about eight kilometers from Providence, the state capital.
At least one person was killed and four were injured. The alleged attacker also died, according to local media reports. Authorities have not specified whether the attacker was killed by the police or if it was a self-inflicted wound.
The incident occurred during a men’s hockey match. In USAthese games are part of interscholastic circuits organized by school districts and state associations.
The superintendency of Coventry Public Schools reported that all of its students were “located and are safe,” while Saint Raphael Academy reported that no members of its community were injured.

The response included local and state police and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), an agency that usually intervenes when there is a possible violation of federal gun laws. Governor Dan McKee indicated that the Rhode Island State Police coordinates actions with the Pawtucket City Council.
With this case, there have been at least 27 mass shootings so far in 2026. As of January 31, 26 episodes had been recorded, with 32 dead and 85 injured. The figures are preliminary and are adjusted as investigations progress.
The new episode occurs just days after another high-impact attack in North America: on February 10, a shooting at a school in British Columbia, Canada, left nine dead—including the attacker—and 27 injured.
