Elections in Alcácer do Sal: Civic Duty Overcomes Adversity

Maria Semião and Fernando Seloriano went to vote this Sunday, February 15, in Alcácer do Sal, which postponed the presidential elections for a week due to the floods, noting that it is “a civic duty”, despite the President of the Republic already being elected.

“It’s a civic duty that we have,” Maria Semião told Lusa, after voting at Escola Básica Pedro Nunes, where the city hall concentrated the seven voting tables as an alternative to the usual places that are unfit or difficult to access.

Although the next president of the Republic has already been chosen, the voter defended that no one should leave their name blank. More than a choice, it is a matter of honor and responsibility, he said.

“Last week we couldn’t do that. And then they did it now and it was the best,” said Fernando Seloriano.

Although some residents said they were not going to vote, as the next president of the Republic had already been decided, Lusa found that there was some movement at the polling place, with “civic duty” being the justification for voters from Alcácer do Sal to travel to the polls.

Maria Gonçalves, who usually votes in Abegoaria, the City Council’s technical services building, told Lusa that “this was the best option”.

“Down there [na zona ribeirinha] It couldn’t be done at all”, he explained.
